The virus takes two to eight weeks to fully mature, and symptoms may not appear until those stages have been achieved. That’s why rabies is so lethal in dogs: there’s no way to diagnose it before symptoms manifest, and it’s too late to intervene once the disease has surfaced. In truth, there is no test that can detect rabies in live animals. Because the most accurate test involves brain tissue, it is usually detected after a dog’s death.
